Caribou Coffee has named Gene Komsky as its new Chief Financial Officer, bringing nearly two decades of strategic finance experience from Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurants, XPO Logistics, and Pactiv Evergreen.

Caribou Coffee has announced the appointment of Gene Komsky as its new Chief Financial Officer, the latest in a series of executive additions designed to sharpen the national coffeehouse operator's strategic focus. The hiring follows a period of deliberate leadership restructuring at Caribou, which saw former CFO Scott Kennedy elevated to Chief Executive Officer in late 2025. Since then, the brand has been systematically filling key roles across marketing, IT, supply chain, and real estate development- building out a leadership bench aligned with its long-term vision. Komsky's appointment completes that picture on the financial side, placing an experienced multi-unit finance leader at the helm of the company's fiscal strategy.
Komsky joins Caribou from Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurants, where he served as Vice President of Finance. He brings close to 20 years of strategic finance leadership to the role, with a track record that spans financial planning and analysis, corporate finance, and operational excellence across both private equity-backed organisations and publicly listed companies. His background gives him fluency in the full range of financial environments a growing brand might encounter- from the discipline of PE-backed ownership to the scrutiny and transparency demanded in public markets. That breadth of experience is precisely the kind of foundation Caribou needs as it pursues continued expansion and long-term value creation.
Before his time at Cooper's Hawk, Komsky built his finance career across a diverse range of industries. He held senior finance positions at XPO Logistics, the global freight logistics giant; Pactiv Evergreen, a leading food packaging company; and Hexacomb Corporation, a manufacturer of paper packaging products and systems. While those sectors may seem far removed from the coffeehouse world, the financial complexity and operational scale involved in each organisation gave Komsky a rigorous grounding in corporate finance at the highest levels. The ability to apply that kind of disciplined thinking to a consumer-facing, multi-unit restaurant brand is precisely what Caribou's leadership was looking for.
CEO Scott Kennedy was candid about the care taken in selecting the right person for the CFO role. "We took our time considering just the right balance of experience, skillset and leadership perspective for this important role in Caribou's future," he said. "Gene is the perfect addition to the team with both years of proven success in corporate finance at the highest levels, but also in the way he thinks- like a head of operations and a key member of the strategy team." Kennedy's comments point to something important - Caribou was not simply looking for a finance technician. It was looking for someone who could operate as a genuine strategic partner- someone whose financial thinking is integrated with operational reality rather than siloed from it. In Komsky, the brand believes it has found exactly that.
Komsky himself was equally forthcoming about what drew him to the opportunity. "It's a pivotal time to be joining Caribou," he said. "Scott and the leadership team have built a thoughtful strategy and strong foundation for the future. There's a clear roadmap in place to continue strengthening the brand, operations and guest experience." He also highlighted the specific nature of the role he is stepping into- one where finance is expected to play an active part in accelerating growth rather than simply reporting on it. "I'm particularly energized to join a team where finance plays a critical role in helping accelerate growth and support long-term value creation for the business and our guests." It is the language of someone who sees the CFO seat as a driver's seat, not a passenger one.
Komsky holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Marketing from DePaul University, as well as a Master of Business Administration in Finance and Operations Management from DePaul's Driehaus College of Business- a dual grounding in both the analytical and strategic dimensions of financial leadership. In his new role, he will work closely alongside Kennedy and Chief Commercial and Strategy Officer Matt Reiter, forming a core leadership trio that will guide Caribou's next phase of growth. On a personal note, Komsky is currently in the process of relocating from Chicago to the Twin Cities with his wife and young son- a move that signals a full commitment to the brand and the community it calls home.
