Caribou Coffee appoints Zane Thomas-Rogers as Chief Operations Officer to strengthen execution across its expanding coffeehouse network.

Caribou Coffee has appointed Zane Thomas-Rogers as Chief Operations Officer, bringing 15 years of multi-unit restaurant leadership from Raising Cane's to a company in the midst of deliberate organizational restructuring. The move follows John Walbrun's retirement after more than eight years steering coffeehouse expansion, particularly across southeastern states. Walbrun will remain as a strategic advisor during the transition, underscoring a measured handoff designed to minimize operational disruption.
Thomas-Rogers arrives at Caribou during what he describes as a moment of organizational clarity rather than crisis. After attending BouCon, Caribou's annual conference, he observed "a companywide energy as we double down on exceptional guest experience and product quality." His selection reflects a deliberate shift in how the company structures its leadership, with the COO role narrowed to focus exclusively on coffeehouse operations.
The COO role has been narrowed to focus exclusively on coffeehouse operations and excellence, with warehouse management and logistics now reporting to the supply chain team. This specialization follows a broader round of senior hires across finance, marketing, real estate development, supply chain, and technology, including the creation of a Chief Commercial Officer position filled by Matt Reiter.
CEO Scott Kennedy framed the restructuring as part of a larger evolution: "We are evolving the Caribou organization to be flatter, with leaders who bring true subject matter expertise and are very hands-on with their teams."
By unburdening the COO from supply chain oversight, the company has created clearer accountability for field operations. Thomas-Rogers' mandate is to ensure that "the strategic decisions we make at our Support Center positively impact and improve what we do in every coffeehouse and cup we serve." This approach grounds strategy in operational reality rather than corporate assumption.

The specialty coffee market provides both urgency and opportunity. The U.S. segment reached USD 47.8 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 9.5 percent through 2030, driven by consumer appetite for high-quality, ethically sourced coffee. Globally, the specialty coffee market is expected to reach $152.69 billion by 2030.
Success in this space demands a precise balance: product excellence paired with operational efficiency, digital convenience married to sustainability commitment, and corporate strategy executed consistently across dozens of locations.
Thomas-Rogers' track record managing complex, company-owned and franchised operations positions him to deliver this balance. His data-driven approach to decision-making aligns with Caribou's stated investment in technology solutions designed to improve efficiency while maintaining quality standards.

Caribou's footprint reflects ambition and diversification. As of December 31, 2024, the company operated 335 company-owned locations, 140 non-traditional sites, and 361 franchised coffeehouses across 11 countries. Recent growth has concentrated in the Southeast, where Caribou opened four new stores in North Carolina and two in Florida during 2024, marking its return to states that had not seen new locations in more than a decade.
This expansion occurs in a competitive region where multiple specialty coffee brands are actively growing. Operational excellence has become the differentiator in premium segments where single-origin coffees and specialty roasts now command high margins but demand precision in execution.

Thomas-Rogers' field-first perspective addresses a critical business reality: strategy succeeds or fails in the quality of individual customer transactions. By combining his expertise in people development and analytics with Caribou's recent investments in specialized functional leadership and technology infrastructure, the company has constructed a leadership model designed to translate corporate vision into consistent, exceptional execution.
This structural clarity and integrated approach positions Caribou to compete effectively in the specialty coffee segment while pursuing measured growth across its existing and new markets.
