There are many hurdles that keep restaurant chains from becoming the employer of choice. Ranging from the negative connotations to lack of personality in the brand, these are just some of the issues.
When one is looking for a job, one tends to look for an employer that not just offers a good job, but a good working environment, perks, and benefits. The restaurant industry is amongst those offering many jobs at any given time, especially the restaurant chains. Can restaurant chains be the employers of choice easily or do they face any problems in the process? Let's begin with understanding what being an employer of choice means and why it is important and then see the hurdles restaurant chains face to become an employer of choice.
In the simplest terms, a company that candidates want to work for is an employer of choice. The characteristics that define this term are companies that have meaningful work, competitive pay packages, strong leadership, engaged workers, and also a good work environment and culture. If a company is an employer of choice, it enjoys these benefits-
As all the boxes of what a candidate wants are ticked off by an employer of choice, more candidates apply for the jobs in these places when made available. This makes the hiring process easy.
If the employees like to work for the company, the chances of them not changing jobs are higher. The retention rate in companies that are employers of choice is much higher than in others.
Two of the biggest hurdles in the hiring process are having budget constraints and not being able to match the compensation packages offered by other restaurants. But if other factors that make a company an employer of choice are taken care of, then these two points might be overlooked by the candidates.
Here are the hurdles that restaurant chains need to overcome to become the employer of choice. If these hurdles are overcome then the restaurant chain can become an employer of choice easily.
Ensuring the line of communication is open, and available to all employees helps keep the work environment healthy. The employees need to know about the protocols to be followed, work profiles, management expectations, changes in timings, or any such information that can affect them directly. Lack of communication can increase frustration and the trust of the employees. Not having a conducive environment that encourages communication feedback, suggestions, ideas, etc. amongst all levels of employees can harm the business.
If the employees don't feel that their job is secure that it can go at any point then they will not be as invested in their work and not give their 100%. This in turn leads to less productivity, and thus creates hurdles in the business' success.
If a business owner and manager are equally interested and inspired in working towards a successful restaurant. If the upper management and managers are observed to be a more active part of taking the business ahead towards success, rather than just being dependent on the staff, then the employees too, have more likelihood of being more invested in the business.
As the one that has the power to make decisions, the employer has to take accountability if something goes wrong. If employees have any worries or queries, then you have to take the initiative to find out the problem and resolve it. Hiding the issues or letting them fester can make the staff annoyed and dissatisfied.
If employees don't thrive in a certain style of leadership, then you need to change leadership style or have a change in leadership to ensure the employees thrive in the work environment. This helps them remain productive and also get opportunities to learn and grow as a good team manager can bring out the best in the team. Not getting a team lead or manager that works well with the team, with fairness and equal opportunities, is among the biggest hurdles for a business.
Just ensuring a good work environment doesn't equate to becoming an employer of choice. The employees need to get a salary that is relevant to their job. Offering substantial salaries, perks, and benefits can ensure the employees are monetarily satisfied. The employees who feel they are getting rightly compensated for their work will be more productive and more likely to be invested in the business too. Those not feeling they are rightly compensated will remain unhappy and look for better opportunities.
Employees also need to be given a proper career progression opportunity. If they see the progression pathway and know what needs to be done for it , then the employees will be more willing to work towards it. This will result in them ensuring work gets done well. Employees who feel they and their work are not getting the due they deserve in terms of salary, feedback, and career growth then they will not have the intent or drive to be more productive. If a restaurant chain is an employer of choice, another benefit it has is its reach across various locations which can give its employees the ability to move locations if required and not have to change jobs. This helps in employee satisfaction and gives more growth opportunities.
Getting respect as professionals and as human beings is a basic requirement for all. A workplace that doesn't offer that is not preferred by employees. Another basic requirement is receiving due recognition for their work and contribution can also lead to employee dissatisfaction. The recognition can come in monetary form, or kind, as a gift or extra time off. A verbal recognition can also help boost confidence and a feeling of belongingness that makes the employee more invested in the business. This can help the overall success of the business.
For best results i.e., a successful business in the case of restaurants, better productivity is essential. That is achieved when not just the work gets done timely and in the right way, but also when employees are happy, at work or otherwise. A good work-life balance is a good way to ensure that happiness. This will ensure that the employees stay healthy, and when they are at work, they give 100% to their job. Overworking the staff, having them work during leaves, etc. can cause an imbalance, making the employees unhappy and thus resulting in poor productivity.
These hurdles might seem many, but they are not difficult to overcome. Happy employees equate to the more productive employees, which in turn leads to a better work environment and culture and also, a successful business. Understanding the hurdles and how to overcome them is essential for restaurant chain businesses.
